Artist Awareness Post - Katherine Lam

Raised in Maryland and gaining a Bachelor's in Fine Arts for Painting and Drawing from University of North Texas, Katherine Lam is now based in Brooklyn, NY. Their work has been featured in many different group exhibitions and they have worked as a teacher's and gallery assistant. Their most relevant work though is as an illustrator for news stories and their work has been featured in the New York Times, the New Yorker, The Telegraph, The Hollywood Reporter, the Smithsonian Magazine, and many more.

"I'm Incarcerated. This is my Covid Lockdown Story" 2021 NYT

This piece is not only very communicative of the idea behind the article, but adds a great sense of mood with the interesting angle, almost monochromatic color scheme, and the strong use of lighting.

"17 Artists capture a Surreal New York From Their Windows." NYT 2020

The way that this piece is framed with the window and the shadows makes this piece much more interesting

"Gay 'chemsex' culture in Hollywood almost killed me. This is how I survived." NBC News 2020

The way that the window and doorframe separates the figures is an interesting choice and the zoomed out composition shows the loneliness isolation, and how the narrator feels forced into his addiction, represented by the bright colors.

Katherine Lam's work really resonates with me. They were shown to my by one of my friends. I love the way they use color, lighting, interesting angles, and architecture. their compositions work very well with the feeling and meaning they intend to convey. They proclaim themselves on their website that their work skirts the line of surrealism, which I also try to do in my own work.
